Digital hazard assessment, from the inspection to the completed action

The Suva checklists are built in, inspections run on the phone with photos, and every finding becomes an action with an owner and a deadline. Your hazard assessment becomes evidence that is ready for the next inspection.

In short

What is a hazard assessment, and how does it work digitally?

A hazard assessment systematically records where hazards exist at work, rates the risk and defines actions. In Switzerland it is required by the Ordinance on Accident Prevention (VUV) and EKAS guideline 6508. Done digitally, you walk through the site with your phone, answer the questions of the Suva checklist, record defects with photos and track the actions to completion in software instead of Excel.

Where hazard assessments get stuck today

  • The inspection is done, but notes end up on paper and are typed up later
  • Actions sit in an Excel list and deadlines pass without anyone noticing
  • Before an inspection by Suva or the labour inspectorate the big search begins
  • Nobody knows exactly which checklist was last worked through and when

Safety App

How hazard assessment works in the Safety App

One module of eight, enabled on its own, and the heart of the Safety App.

Suva checklists built in

The Suva checklists are available as content in the app. You pick them when you start an inspection and maintain your own checklists alongside for site-specific hazards.

Inspection on the phone with photos

Walk through the site, answer the questions and record each finding with a photo on the spot. Findings outside an inspection are captured through quick entry.

Risk matrix and residual risk

Likelihood and severity give the risk class and priority. After the action you rate the residual risk, so the effect is documented.

Actions with deadline and origin

Every finding becomes an action with an owner, a deadline and its origin, meaning the question that triggered it. Reminders run in three stages up to escalation to managers.

Four steps to a documented hazard assessment

  1. 1

    Choose a checklist

Pick a Suva checklist or your own checklist for the area.

  2. 2

    Inspect

Answer the questions on the phone, record defects with photos.

  3. 3

    Rate

Classify the risk with the matrix and set the priority.

  4. 4

    Track actions

Assign owners and deadlines, reminders run automatically.

What changes for you

  • No more typing up after the inspection, everything is captured by the end of the walk
  • No action gets lost, because each one has a deadline and a name
  • At an inspection you show walks, actions and residual risks at the push of a button
  • The management report sums it up for management, as PDF and Excel

Frequently asked questions

Is a hazard assessment mandatory in Switzerland?

Yes. Employers must identify the hazards in their business and take the necessary measures, based on the Accident Insurance Act, the Ordinance on Accident Prevention and EKAS guideline 6508. How much effort it takes depends on the hazards in the business.

Are all Suva checklists included in the Safety App?

The Suva checklists are available as content in the app and can be selected for every inspection. You also maintain your own checklists. The app has not been reviewed or certified by Suva, and we do not claim otherwise.

How is this different from the checklists in mySuva?

mySuva provides the checklists to work through. The Safety App runs the whole safety system, meaning inspections, actions with deadlines and escalation, accidents, instructions, PPE, first aiders and emergencies, with a management report.

Does the inspection work without internet?

No. The Safety App needs an internet connection. On the phone it can be added to the home screen and behaves like an app.

How often must the hazard assessment be repeated?

Whenever something changes, such as new machines, processes or workplaces, and at regular intervals. The Safety App reminds you of due inspections and actions so the assessment stays current.
