Claude, ChatGPT & Copilot Compared: Which AI Assistant for Which Task?

Hardly any question comes up as often in our conversations with Swiss SMEs as this one: «Which AI assistant should we use – Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot?» The honest answer is usually not «either – or», but «it depends». The three major assistants overlap in many respects, yet each has clear strengths. Anyone who knows when which tool shines gets considerably more out of them than someone who commits to a single one.

In this article, we place the three assistants in context in a vendor-neutral way – without marketing promises, but with an eye on everyday work in a Swiss SME.

First the task, then the tool

Before we compare, an important principle: the «best» AI assistant does not exist. There is only the right one for a particular task and a particular environment. A company that already works entirely in Microsoft 365 has different priorities from a team that wants to analyse long contracts or develop its own software.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is not a separate chat window but is built into Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and PowerPoint. Its biggest advantage is exactly this proximity: Copilot knows your emails, documents and appointments (within your permissions) and works directly where your data already resides. For companies deeply embedded in the Microsoft world, that is a strong argument.

An employee can create a meeting summary directly in Teams with Copilot in the morning, review a long framework contract with Claude at midday and draft a product description with ChatGPT in the afternoon.

One area in which the assistants are developing especially fast is programming. Simple code suggestions have turned into so-called AI coding agents – such as Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex – which no longer just write individual lines, but implement whole functions, hunt for bugs and automate workflows.

This is relevant for SMEs even if you do not program yourself: tailor-made solutions are created faster and more affordably than just two years ago. For all the enthusiasm, one point must never be missing: what happens to your data? Since September 2023, the revised Data Protection Act (revDSG) has applied in Switzerland. For choosing an assistant, this means:

• Free versions are risky for business data. In the free offerings it is often unclear how inputs are reused. Sensitive or personal data does not belong there.
• Business and enterprise plans are the right framework. With the paid business versions of ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft Copilot, your inputs are generally not used to train the models – a key difference.
• Microsoft 365 Copilot scores where governance already exists. Anyone who has already set up Microsoft 365 contracts and permissions cleanly moves with Copilot within a familiar data-protection and compliance framework.

These considerations are no reason to wait, but a reason to shape the entry deliberately. A short internal guideline on which data may go into which tool creates confidence and speeds up adoption.

How to find your combination

A pragmatic path for your SME:

1. Take stock: What are you working with anyway? A Microsoft 365 organisation naturally starts with Copilot.
2. Add as needed: If there is a lot of text work or document analysis, Claude or ChatGPT is worth adding.
3. Test small: Give two or three people access for a few weeks and measure the benefit on real tasks.
4. Set the rules: Clarify data protection and responsibilities before rolling out more broadly.

This way you avoid misinvestment and build internal knowledge instead of becoming dependent on a single provider.
